The person that creates jewelry from stone is called a lapidary. The person that picks up a rock and sees through the rough exterior of the rock’s surface and sees the potential beauty hidden within is called an artist. Making fine jewelry from stone requires both skills.
I have created the fine jewelry you see. I prefers to be called an artist rather than a lapidary because of the joy I get from discovering that beautiful piece of jewelry that lives within the rock that I work with. It’s not the technical skills required to make the rock shine, but the artistic skills required to find the beauty within the rock that I enjoys the most. My lapidary skills allow me to express my artistic vision. It’s like building a beautiful picture frame: I might use the hammer to build the frame. The hammer is merely a tool, but the finished frame is the expression of the artist’s vision built with that tool.
